Buffers Alley mourn the sad passing of Ger Hendrick, RIP   29/03/2021

From Rathcoffey to Buffers Alley with a smile - Ger Hendrick RIP  Buffers Alley GAA Club mourns the loss of our esteemed member.

Ger came to the parish of Kilmuckridge with a Kildare footballing background and in his years at Buffers Alley, volunteering at a GAA club where he belonged was all-important to him as he gave generously of his time on many noteworthy projects.  He started with Coiste na nÓg when his children began to play the game and quickly became immersed in all things Buffers Alley as he revealed his coaching and mentoring abilities.  His style was the ‘encouraging word’ for every player in his care as he introduced them to GAA activities at the Buffers Alley GAA Grounds.

His genial nature and happy disposition were a joy to behold and it wasn’t long before his Accounting talents were recognised and put to good use as he settled in to the role of Buffers Alley Coiste na nÓg Treasurer.  In this role, he brought out the best in those around him and started an annual Golf Classic which raised valuable funds for our underage players over the last number of years.  As an Accountant with Renault Ireland, he used his considerable contacts to procure some wonderful prizes for many club events and no fundraiser was complete without the customary ‘Late Late Show Tickets’ that Ger always managed to secure on our behalf.

Talent like Ger’s was never going to go unnoticed and in December 2018, he stepped into the role of Buffers Alley GAA Club Treasurer where in his two years running the adult club finances, he took on and saw through some wonderful enhancements to club facilities.  One of the projects managed by Ger was the addition of a 1.2 kilometre walking track which was only recently completed but overseen by Ger from start to finish despite his illness over the past year.

In 2019, not long after taking on the Treasurer mantle, Ger organised a ‘Panel Night’ with an array of household sporting names and GAA stars.  Ger’s ability to engage people and create an atmosphere of positivity made many things possible for us in Buffers Alley and we will never forget the role he played or the time he gave to club activities since his arrival in Buffers Alley. To maximise the contribution of the Panel Night Stars that night in July 2019,  Ger arranged for Kilkenny hurler Jackie Tyrrell to arrive early and lead a coaching session with our underage boys which was a massive success and  appreciated by all in Coiste na nÓg.

Such was Ger’s generosity that he continued in a supporting role since he stepped down as Club Treasurer a few short months ago.  He will be greatly missed in Buffers Alley and we offer our sincere sympathy to his wife Michelle, his children Liam, Ciarán and Martin and to the extended Hendrick and Mangan families.

A candle will be lit in the clubhouse in Ger's memory.
