Gorey District Inaugural Awards Night 2019   12/12/2019

The first-ever Gorey District GAA Awards ceremony was held in the Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey on Sat. 30th November.

Over 200 people representing the 11 clubs in the district came together to show their support for their Club Person of the Year with Buffers Alley and Ferns-St. Aidan’s acknowledging their Hall of Fame nominees.  Next year two more clubs will get the opportunity to reward their Hall of Fame recipients.

The Chairman and Secretary of the District GAA, Jack O’Brien and Michael Maguire thanked the clubs for their co-operation in getting this inaugural function off the ground and looking forward to a bigger and better event in 2020. In their addresses to the audience, they re-iterated that the Awards ceremony could not have taken place without the huge support and sponsorship from Paddy Redmond and his management and staff of the Ashdown Park Hotel.  No stone was left unturned to ensure that everyone had a brilliant night. They were delighted to see so many cups and trophies won by the clubs under their umbrella at District and County level in 2019, with particular mention to the clubs who advanced to Leinster. Buffers Alley was amongst those winning clubs - lifting the Enniscorthy Farm Systems Junior B Football (District and County).

Martin Storey, the invited guest, addressed the gathering outlining the importance of the volunteer in the club. He stated that “It’s not always the number of games we lost or won but the people who crossed our paths and left lasting memories along our GAA journey”. Martin and his wife Rosaleen were honoured to have been asked to the event to honour the “unsung heroes” in the Gorey District area.

Derek Kent (Co. Chairman) in his address thanked the Gorey District committee and the event organising committee for following other districts  in recognising the volunteer who works away quietly on a daily basis with the chores he/she does often going unnoticed.

This year the Ashdown Park Hotel Perpetual Trophy presented to the committee was awarded Castletown who were nominated by the other clubs for “Club of the Year” A further Appreciation Award was made to Jack O’Brien (Chairman) for over 30 year’s service in the Gorey District.

Both hotels in Gorey (Ashdown Park & the Amber Springs) in addition to Jim O’Connor (Garden Nursery), Cullen Fruit & Veg, Alder Jewellers and Glen Fuels all kindly donated Door Prizes which were much appreciated.

All 42 of the Buffers Alley contingent had a memorable night. Roll on 2020.
